Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Yesterday
4/23 Games
Atlanta
4 Colorado 3 (Game 1)
A game time temperature of 23 degrees didn’t cool
off Justin Upton who became the first player to reach ten home runs when he
belted a solo shot in the first, while Dan
Uggla and Evan Gattis also homered to tack it on for pitcher Mike Minor, who’s now
3-1 in four starts.
Atlanta
10 Colorado 2 (Game 2)
The Upton brothers hit back-to-back HRs in the
fifth, Justin his ML-leading 11th, and the Braves completed the
doubleheader sweep of the Rockies who entered the day with baseball’s best
record. That now belongs back to the
Braves.
Los
Angeles Dodgers 7 New York Mets 2
Mark Ellis went 4-5, including a pair of HRs (his
first being #100 of his career), and four RBI as the Dodgers tagged the
Mets bullpen for five runs at Citi Field.
Oakland
13 Boston 0
The wheels completely fell off the Red Sox bus
Tuesday night as they could do no right.
Bartolo Colon shut them out for seven rain soaked innings and Boston
fans were probably happy this one ended early, as evidenced by the nearly empty
stands when the game was called after seven.
New
York Yankees 4 Tampa Bay 3
Ichiro Suzuki singled home two runs with two outs in
the top of the ninth as the Yankees kept last year’s A.L. CY Young winner David
Price winless.
Baltimore
4 Toronto 3
Manny Machado had two hits and two RBI as the
Orioles snuck past R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays at home.
St.
Louis 2 Washington 0
Adam Wainwright dominated the Nationals by striking
out nine and walking just one, falling just short of a complete game shutout.
Pittsburgh
2 Philadelphia 0
Jeff Locke pitched six strong innings and Gabby
Sanchez homered as the Pirates beat Cole Hamels (0-3) in Philadelphia.
Chicago
Cubs 4 Cincinnati 2 (10 innings)
The Cubs blew another ninth-inning lead, but this
time won it in the tenth when they scored two runs, one on Darwin Barney’s
solo homer.
Cleveland vs. Chicago White Sox – Postponed due to
rain. No make-up date scheduled.
Houston
3 Seattle 2
Houston tied a season high by striking out 15 times
against Mariners pitching, but somehow still found a way to win. Justin Maxwell was hit in the hand in the
third with the bases loaded, pouching across what proved to be the winning run.
Los
Angeles Angels 5 Texas 4 (11 innings)
Howie Kendrick had a magical night in the land of
Disney as he hit two HRs, the second a walk-off solo shot in the 11th
to give the Angels a win via the long ball for the second time in
three days.
Milwaukee
6 San Diego 3
The Brewers used a five-run second inning to propel
them to their ninth straight win, and Yovanni Gallardo pitched well enough to
earn his second win.
Arizona
6 San Francisco 4 (11 innings)
The Diamondbacks suffered through a blown save by
closer J.J. Putz when he allowed a game-tying ninth inning homer to Brandon
Belt, but they persevered in the 11th when they pushed across a run
on a wild pitch for the win.
Minnesota
4 Miami 3 (Game 1)
Twins rookie outfielder Oswaldo Arcia hit his first
major league home run when he connected for a three-run homer in the fourth off
Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez, and Kevin Correia improved to 2-0.
Miami
8 Minnesota 5 (Game 2)
Rob Brantley had three hits and a career-high four
RBI as the Marlins offense pounded out a season-high 16 hits to split the
doubleheader in chilly Minneapolis.
Kansas
City vs. Detroit – Postponed due to rain.
Record
Watch: Justin
Upton is on pace to hit 93 HRs, 20 more than the record of 73 set by Barry
Bonds in the 2001 season.
A.L.
MVP Watch: Robinson
Cano, 2B, New York Yankees. Had two more
hits Tuesday and is batting .341, and is on pace for 51 HRs and 119 RBI.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Justin
Upton, OF, Atlanta (6th mention).
Hit two more home runs Tuesday (no.’s 10 &11). He didn’t hit #10
until August last year.
News
& Notes – Missing – a commemorative plaque in AT&T
Park in San Francisco honoring home run king Barry Bonds. The plaque was hanging on a brick wall inside
the right outfield wall façade, and has disappeared. A new one will replace it, but an
investigation is ongoing.
Dodger’s pitcher Chad Billingsley’s season is over
after just three weeks as he plans to undergo Tommy John Surgery on his
pitching arm.
History
–Milwaukee Brewers Team History
The Brewers didn’t
start out as the Brewers or even near Milwaukee, and they’ve competed in both
the American and National Leagues, unfortunately with very little success. Originally they were part of the 1969 American
League expansion as the Seattle Pilots, but after one year they went bankrupt
and were purchased by Bud Selig, the current Commissioner of Baseball, and moved to Milwaukee and he renamed them the Brewers, after the local brewing industry. In 1982, led by Cecil Cooper, Paul Molitor
& Robin Yount, they made their only World Series appearance, losing to the St. Louis
Cardinals in seven games. In 1998, after
baseball added two teams to each league (Tampa Bay & Arizona), there were
an odd number of teams in each division and the Brewers agreed to switch to the
American League. It took 26
years between playoff appearances, but they returned in 2008 as a wildcard team, only to lose in the first round.
Finally, they won their first Division Title in 2011, but failed to reach the World Series, losing this time in
six games to the Cardinals in the NLCS.
Trivia
– Today’s
Question – Who is the Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcaster, a position he’s held

50 years?
Yesterday’s

League history to throw no-hitters in back-to-back starts?

Vander Meer in 1938
