Yankees Timely Hittting Against Arizona Continues

Here's what's happening in baseball:

Yesterday's Games (4/17)

Mets  vs.  Rockies Postponed due to winter still

New York Yankees 4 Arizona 3
Remembering how clutch hits won World Series games for the Yankees in the 2001 World Series against the Diamondbacks, they pulled out some more late inning magic Wednesday night as they tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, and in the eighth, pinch hitter Travis Hafner sent the first pitch he saw into the right field stands to take the lead.  Mariano Rivera closed the game in the ninth for the Yankee win, and  C.C. Sabathia improved to 3-1.

Boston 6  Cleveland 3
Mike Napoli and Daniel Nava each drove in two runs as Boston jumped all over Cleveland ace Justin Masterson for three runs in the first inning to ignite the win.  The Sox and Indians combined for 25 strikeouts and 15 walks Tuesday.
It was the first time in major league history that happened in a
nine inning game.

Pittsburgh 5  St. Louis 0
A.J. Burnett was unhittable into the seventh inning before giving up the game’s only hit (a double by Carlos Beltran), and Andrew McCutchen had two hits and scored twice as the Pirates overwhelmed the Cardinals and rookie pitcher Shelby Miller.

Tampa Bay 6  Baltimore 2
Kelly Johnson & Shelley Duncan homered for the Rays, James Loney had 3 RBI, and Matt Moore struck out 7 as the Rays scored the most runs since April 6th.

Cincinnati 1 Philadelphia 0 (Game 1 resumed in the 9th inning from Tuesday’s delay)
This game lasted 9 minutes before Jay Bruce singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Homer Bailey struck out 10 for the Reds in a no decision as Aroldis Chapman picked up the win by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.

Cincinnati 11 Philadelphia 2 (Game 2)
Mike Leake struck out 7 and allowed just 3 hits over 7 innings, and Todd Frazier & Zach Cozart homered as the Reds completed the sweep of the Phillies 3-0.

Milwaukee 4  San Francisco 3
Rarely used Blake Lali singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Brewers to a walk-off win.

Washington 6  Miami 1
Bryce Harper had 4 hit and Kurt Suzuki belted a 2-run HR as the Nationals won easily in Miami.  Ross Detwiler won his first game of the season.

Kansas City 1  Atlanta 0
Wade Davis pitched 5-hit ball through seven innings, and Jeff Francouer singled in the game’s only run as the Royals snapped Atlanta’s 10-game winning streak.

Chicago White Sox 7  Toronto 0
Alex Rios & Tyler Flowers homered, and Jose Quintana struck out 7 in 6 &2/3 innings as the White Sox shut out the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Texas vs. Chicago (Postponed due to rain)

Los Angeles Angels vs. Minnesota (Postponed due to rain)

Oakland 7  Houston 5
Bartolo Colon pitched six steady innings, striking out 3, and the A’s chased Houston starter Bud Norris in the first inning with 6 runs to start the game.

San Diego 7   Los Angeles Dodgers 2
The Padres tagged Dodger ace Clayton Kershaw for three HRs early and enjoyed the season debut of All-Star 3B Chase Headley as he returned to the lineup getting one hit in four at-bats.

Detroit 2  Seattle 1 (14 innings)

Starters Max Scherzer & Felix Hernandez each struck out 12 batters in their 8 innings pitched of a 1-1 tie, and each deserved a better fate after the game wasn’t settled until a groundout in the 14th inning scored the winning run for Detroit.

Record Watch:  The Miami Marlins record are 3-12 and are on pace to lose 122 games, which would break the all-time record for team losses in a season of 119, held by the Detroit Tigers in 2003.
A.L. MVP Watch:   Alex Rios, OF, Chicago White Sox.  1-3 yesterday with his 5th HR.  He's batting .350 is on pace for 54 HRs and 100 RBI.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Bryce Harper, OF, Washington (4th mention).   4-5 yesterday and is on pace to hit .363 with 54 HRs and 118 RBI.

Fantasy Spin:  Cincinnati shortstop Zach Cozart was hitting .195 going into yesterday’s games with the Phillies, before going 3-5 with his 4th HR in the second game to raise his average to .228.  Last year he hit 15 HRs in his first full season, and that number should only increase with another year of experience, and crucial lineup placement.  I mentioned before how Reds 2B Brandon Phillips has taken advantage of OF Ryan Ludwick’s injury by batting in the cleanup spot, and the same should hold true for Cozart.  He’s been hitting second ahead of Joey Votto and Phillips, and if he stays there his numbers could get a big boost.  He’s on pace for an unlikely 43 HRs, but 20-25 isn’t out of the question, especially playing home games at hitter friendly Great American Ballpark.

History – Kansas City Royals - Team History

The Kansas City Athletics played in the city from ’55 – ’67 before moving to Oakland, and in 1969 the Royals were founded by Kansas City businessman Ewing Kauffman and added to the American League along with the Seattle Pilots for the 1969 expansion season.  They take their name from American Royal, a livestock show, horse show & rodeo held annually in Kansas City since 1899.  They appeared in the playoffs seven times from ’76 – ’85, losing the 1980 World Series in 6 games to the Philadelphia Phillies, and winning their first ever World Series in 1985 when they beat in-state rival the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games.
Trivia – Today’s Question – What pitcher holds the Kansas City Royals record for most career wins?

Yesterday’s Question:   What is the record and who holds it for most times walked in a season?
Answer:   Luke Appling with 2,749 hits from 1930 - 1950

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make in Las Vegas casinos: Over/Under 5 runs scored in the Marlins-Reds game tonight.

Yesterday’s Bet: Over Under 7 strikeouts by Oakland starter Bartolo Colon today vs. the Houston Astros.
Result:  Under.  Colon struck out just 3 Houston batters.
