History –
1937 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the New York Giants 4 games to 1.
The Yankees and the Giants met again in the World Series (for
the fifth time) in a rematch of the 1936 Fall Classic that had the Yankees
beating the Giants in six games. This
time the Yankees prevailed again for their sixth overall title, and third out
of five against the Giants. The Yankees
did not make a single error in the entire series, setting a record that can
only be duplicated but never beaten. The
Yankees won Games 1 & 2 at home by an 8-1 score, with Hall of Famer
pitchers Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez picking up wins. The teams split Games 3 & 4 at the Polo
Grounds as Lou Gehrig hit his last World Series home run in a Game 3 loss. The Yankees closed out the Giants in Game 5
as Lefty Gomez allowed just two runs for his second series game win, and Joe DiMaggio
hit hi first World Series home run as the Yankees won 4-2 to become consecutive
world champions. Their sixth World
Series title broke a tie with the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox for
most World Series titles, a record the Yankees still hold today by a wide
margin. The Yankees outscored the Giants
28-12, outhit them 42-40, and as mentioned above, committed no errors, to the
Giants nine. Hall of Famers in the
series included for the Yankees: manager Joe McCarthy, outfielder Joe DiMaggio,
first baseman Lou Gehrig, catcher Bill Dickey, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, and
pitchers Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing; and for the Giants: shortstop Travis
Jackson, pitcher Carl Hubbell, outfielder Mel Ott and first baseman Bill Terry.
